| Free tier | No free allowance at this tier: storage is billed from the first byte at USD 0.00099 per GB-month (USD 1 per TB-month) in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), EU (Ireland) and EU (Stockholm) unit none; metered on none; AWS sells no free storage in this class; the only allowance that reaches it is the credits-based free plan for a new account, which is a six-month trial and its own record |
|---|---|
| Price | USD 1.00 per TB-month (USD 0.00099 per GB-month) in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), EU (Ireland) and EU (Stockholm); USD 1.80 per TB-month (USD 0.0018 per GB-month) in EU (Frankfurt); storage only, before retrieval |
| Limits |
Restore latency is the working limit: a Standard restore typically finishes within 12 hours and a Bulk restore within 48 hours, and an object larger than 5 TB restores at up to 300 megabytes per second. Every archived object is billed 40 KB of metadata (8 KB at the S3 Standard rate, 32 KB at the Deep Archive rate), which is 3.9 percent of the stored volume at a 1 MB object and 0.0038 percent at a 1 GB object. A restored copy is billed at the S3 Standard rate while it lives. Archived objects cannot be read in real time, and the class cannot be left without a restore followed by a copy. |
| Binding | none no limit row fails before the restore step: the 180-day minimum is a cost floor on churn, the per-object cap of 48.8 TiB is far above a single dataset, and 1,000 restore requests per second covers a 20 TB corpus of 1 GB objects in 20 seconds; what a reader meets first is the 12- to 48-hour restore wait and the USD 2.50 to USD 20 per TB retrieval fee |
| Identity | card an AWS account is the unit of access: the root user email address is verified with a code sent to it, a phone number able to receive calls and SMS is confirmed with a code, and the sign-up form cannot be completed without a valid payment method; whether the card is charged at sign-up for the credits-based free plan is unverified |
| Egress | Reading an archived object costs twice: a retrieval fee (USD 0.02 per GB Standard, USD 0.0025 per GB Bulk in US East (N. Virginia)) and a temporary copy billed at the S3 Standard rate for the days the restore is kept. Data transfer out to the internet is metered separately: the first 100 GB per month is free across all AWS services, then USD 0.09 per GB for the first 10 TB per month, USD 0.085 per GB for the next 40 TB, USD 0.07 per GB to 150 TB. free allowance: 100 GB per month of data transfer out to the internet, aggregated across all AWS Services and Regions except China and GovCloud price per tb: USD 90 per TB (USD 0.09 per GB) for the first 10 TB per month beyond the free 100 GB; USD 20 per TB retrieved at the Standard retrieval tier and USD 2.50 per TB at Bulk in US East (N. Virginia) |
| Per-object cap | 48.8 TiB per object through multipart upload (10,000 parts of 5 MiB to 5 GiB); 5 GiB through a single PUT |
| Retention | no expiry: objects stay until deleted; a minimum storage duration of 180 days is billed per object, and an object deleted, overwritten or moved to another class earlier is charged the pro-rated storage fee for the remaining days |
| Interface | s3, rclone, cli S3 API storage class DEEP_ARCHIVE (x-amz-storage-class: DEEP_ARCHIVE); an archived object answers a GET only after a RestoreObject call and the wait for the temporary copy it creates endpoint: s3.<region>.amazonaws.com |
| Tooling | AWS CLI (aws s3 cp --storage-class DEEP_ARCHIVE, aws s3api restore-object --restore-request Days=N,GlacierJobParameters={Tier=Bulk}), boto3 and any AWS SDK, s3cmd, and rclone's S3 backend, whose storage-class option 7 is Glacier Deep Archive and whose restore step is documented; lifecycle rules and S3 Batch Operations drive the transitions and the bulk restores. |
| Composes with | Cold tier behind a hot S3 bucket: a lifecycle rule transitions objects into DEEP_ARCHIVE and a RestoreObject call brings a temporary copy back at the S3 Standard rate, and the transition is one-way, so leaving the class means restore, then copy. |
| Reliability | Archived objects are not readable in real time: a restore takes up to 12 hours at Standard and up to 48 hours at Bulk, the restored copy lasts only the number of days requested in the restore call, and a transition into DEEP_ARCHIVE cannot be reversed except by restoring and copying the object. |
| Notes | The cheapest of the eight S3 storage classes and the cheapest archive class AWS sells, at USD 0.00099 per GB-month against USD 0.023 per GB-month for S3 Standard, but it is not the cheapest at-rest object tier: a Standard tier at another vendor prices stored data at USD 0 per GB-month and meters egress at USD 0.01 per GB, with no 180-day floor and no restore step, and a hot object store sells USD 0.000999 per GB-month, which is the same price per stored byte without the wait. Reading the data back is where the tier stops being cheap: USD 2.50 per TB at Bulk after up to 48 hours and USD 20 per TB at Standard after up to 12 hours in US East (N. Virginia), plus the S3 Standard rate for as long as the temporary copy is kept. It pays only for a corpus written once and read less than once a year, at a per-TB rest price that any GB-denominated offer of USD 0.001 or less matches. |
| Evidence note | documented the storage, retrieval, request and early-delete prices come from the AWS price list API for the US East (N. Virginia) and EU (Frankfurt) regions and from the retail pricing page; the 180-day minimum, the 40 KB per-object metadata overhead, the restore times, the 1,000 requests per second and the sign-up gates are quoted from first-party pages read on 2026-11-01; timing a restore from a bucket on an account would make it measured |
